Journalists for Tolerance

A human rights organisation founded in 2009 by a group of independent Belarusian journalists, working to foster a culture of tolerance and inclusion in Belarusian society and communities through changes in communication practices and by increasing the positive visibility of vulnerable groups in cultural and media spaces.

Until 2020, the organisation operated within the restrictive environment of Belarus. Following the unprecedented crackdown on democratic civil society, the team was forced into exile and has since continued its work remotely, now engaging with communities and partners worldwide.

We achieve our mission through

  • Designing and delivering training on equality, diversity and inclusion, including building inclusive teams and events, the use of inclusive language, and accurate representation of vulnerable groups in the media and the arts. Explore our ready-made packages or request a tailored solution.
  • Developing a community of media and art professionals, creators and experts engaged in the themes of inclusion and tolerance. We offer free learning opportunities and support in implementing projects and encouraging best practice through J4t Awards. Learn more about available opportunities.
  • Media monitoring and research on hate speech and the representation of LGBTQ issues in Belarusian media.
  • Creating educational, media, art and digital projects aimed at promoting a culture of tolerance and inclusion. These include educational online guides, text-checking services, brochures and media projects.

We envision a future in which

Belarusian media and cultural communities recognise their social responsibility and act in support of inclusion,

Civic activists, human rights defenders and policymakers are guided by the principles of equality and non-discrimination,

Members of vulnerable and stigmatised groups play an active role in public life,

A culture of tolerance and inclusion is embraced as a value that strengthens connections and enables everyone to express themselves and feel safe.
