Speaking and writing about people without stereotypes: the About People media guide has been updated

16/04/2026

The team behind the human rights initiative Journalists for Tolerance (J4T) has updated the online resource About People — a unique guide that helps journalists, editorial teams and everyone creating content to do so ethically and inclusively.

About People is a practical media guide bringing together relevant and accessible recommendations on how to write about different groups in society professionally and with respect for people.

This interactive tool helps users quickly find accurate wording, avoid common mistakes and work confidently with sensitive topics.

Since the previous update of the resource in 2020, language standards and the context for covering issues related to vulnerable groups have changed significantly. That is why the J4T team reviewed and updated the content of About People, as well as refreshed the contacts of experts and профиль organisations that can be approached for comment or consultation on sensitive topics.

The updated version — more user-friendly and richer in content — includes specific recommendations for working with 10 key topics, including LGBTQ+ people and transgender people, people with disabilities, migrants, Roma people and older people.

For deeper engagement with inclusive topics, About People offers four formats:

Cards — quick and visual prompts before publication, helping users write accurately and avoid mistakes.

Tests — a simple way to check and reinforce knowledge in practice.

Library — research, articles and reference materials for exploring the topic in greater depth.

Screening room — a selection of videos and films that help users better understand the context and experiences of different people.

All materials have been prepared in partnership with leading organisations working on inclusion issues. The authors drew on their experience, terminology and expertise to ensure that the recommendations are relevant and professional.
